The Parisian Eye

Exclusive sketches : the new face of the Hotel Plaza Athénée, Paris

Nov 29, 2013 | Parisian Eye

Last September, I was among the
lucky few to spend an exceptional afternoon at the Plaza Athénée – followed by
a wonderful cocktail, right before the hotel closed for refurbishment. The
re-opening of the palace is scheduled for June 2014, and while we wait everyone
wonders what the Dorchester Collection gem will look like after the lift.
The man in charge of giving a new
face to the Hotel Plaza Athénée is Bruno Moinard. If his name may not be known
by the majority, his genius work is everywhere : Bruno Moinard is the
designer of all the Cartier stores around the world, and has designed
Christie’s New York, Hermès’ Paris head office, the Château Latour wine estate…
Not to mention his work on events scenography !
Bruno Moinard shared with me 2
exclusive sketches of his work, and a some precisions on what will be done to
restore the palace while keeping its architecture and soul. Many parts of the
Plaza Athénée are listed buildings, which means that the great majority of the renovation
will rest upon details (in the lobby, the Galerie des Gobelins, the interior
patio, the Marie Antoinette lounge, the Relais Plaza restaurant and most of the
reception areas.
Finally, Bruno Moinard will also
conceive a ballroom in one of the adjoining buildings recently acquired by the
Dorchester Collection!
I am so excited to see and share the
results… Looking forward to the re-opening!
