The Parisian life in pictures : a class with the rock star of flowers Jeff Leatham at the Four Seasons Hotel George V

Oct 02, 2013 | Parisian Eye
On a
Saturday morning in late September, I had the utmost privilege to be
transported into the enchanting world of the Four Seasons Hotel George V in
Paris to attend a floral art design class, with no other than Jeff Leatham.
Known as the rock star of flowers, Jeff has been the artistic director of the
hotel for the past 13 years : he has literally made it a worldwide
reference on the palace scene, giving it a new ambiance every months thanks to the
9,000 flowers that are delivered on a weekly basis from Holland.

What also
contributed to Jeff’s « rock star » status is that he has become a
reference himself among the stars. He performs for their private celebrations
(Eva longoria and, more recently, Tina Turner trusted upon him for their
weddings), as well as their public events (such as Kylie Minogue’s book launch
in November 2012). Other celebrity fans of Jeff Leatham’s special touch include
Oprah Winfrey and Madonna, only to name a few…

I am a
big fan of flowers in general, and never fail to admire the beautiful
arrangements on display at the hotels I visit. Needless to say, I was
anticipating to learn from the best while attending Jeff’s flower class… And I
was not disappointed !
For over an hour, he teached us the basics in arranging a bouquet that makes the difference (with, I have to say, an ever so cute accent every time he spoke in French). As I learned, a few rules are essential – but not obvious to the majority of us : always use monochromatic colors for your bouquet, that will keep it neat and simple. In order the arrangement to stand out, the simpler the vase, the better : at home, see-through round vases (especially if you put two, one on top of the other) and small square vases are must-haves. It’s the flowers that must do the show !

In terms
of flowers, Jeff Leatham has a few favourites that he likes to work with :
hydrangeas, that immediately give intensity to a bouquet ; orchids; and
roses.
For me, two
creations are associated with Jeff : the long, cylindric see-through vases
with dramatic hydrangea and orchid arrangements delicately set on the
edge or upside down; and the small see-through round vases that he likes to fill with
petals.

This empty table was soon to be transformed by Jeff – shot with my Leica

Learning
how to make a bouquet with Jeff definitely was a real privilege. Even I succeeded
to create a beautiful one… Thank you Jeff, and big thanks to the Four Seasons
Hotel George V !

Jeff Leatham’s flower workshop will be available to residents of the Four Seasons Hotel George V and customers of its restaurant Le Cinq.
