Hedi Slimane back in the business
It was, without any doubt, the most exciting news of the last Paris Fashion Week.
First only a rumor, French house Yves Saint Laurent made it official on March 7 : cult designer Hedi Slimane, beloved of rockers and fashionistas alike, is returning to the industry after a five-year break to become creative director at Yves Saint Laurent.
Slimane is seen as having revolutionised the way men dress during his stint at Christian Dior, from 2000 and 2007 : his distinctive skinny suits and tight low trousers found admirors and imitators worldwide.
Named “creative and image director” of Yves Saint Laurent, Slimane “will take on artistic responsibility for the brand and all the collections,” said a joint statement from Saint Laurent and its parent company, the French luxury giant PPR.
The return of Slimane has been enthusiastically welcomed by an industry that reveres him as a cult figure, and there is no doubt his first collection will be highly anticipated by all… Even the legendary Karl Lagerfeld shed some 45 kilos (90 pounds) to be able to slide into a pencil-thin Slimane suit back in his Dior Homme days.
